Week 7

This week in Game Design, I learned what supplies everyone needs for the board games they are going to make. I am going to supply the materials and some guidance, and see what games they can come up with. With the little time we had remaining, we played Snake Oil, a game where you try to pitch a product to a customer.

Week 4

This week in Game Design, we learned some new vocab words to describe board games. We also played a fun game called Coup that involved lying. Some of my students were really good at the lying part.  J  This next week we are going to finish learning the vocab words and then we are going to work together to design a very simple board game.

See you next time,

Week 2

This week, we learned all about the medium of a game and I learned from the students some information about the type of game they will make later this semester.

In other news, if any of the kids in the class have games they would like to play with the group, have them bring that game to class.

Game Design Update

I have recently made a resolution to blog every week. This resolution came when Genevieve told me to blog every week.  Anyway, a recap of what we have done since the last update. I have worked with every one of the kids (except Zoe, sorry) and they should have a game that they have designed and played at least once. We have also tested out a few of the games in class. We had a fun Halloween playing games with Monsters in them. And this week, we had a review of the elements of games and learned how lying can make a fun game.

Update

Sorry I have not blogged yet, I have been busy. Anyway, So far, In Game Design, we have learned the basic parts of board games such as Mediums (card, tile, board, etc.), objectives (what you are trying to accomplish, Resources (pieces), Theme (the feel of the game), Player Format (teams/not), and Mechanics (sets of rules).
This week we started working on the prototyping of games. Today they worked in groups to invent a new game or change an existing one, using various pieces of sports equipment. One group invented a Hunger Games sport, the other made Capture the Flag Football.
Next week I will be handing out supplies to help people make a game at home.
